The sleepers do get booked early. We got a first class compartment going to varna, then booked the sleeper back to sofia as soon as we arrived in varna. I would take the train and hire a car in Varna. This very true. The biggest barrier stopping people coming to Varna and the surrounding area is the difficulty/cost of travelling there.
