Buy a cheap little generator that can power essentials in dire circumstances. It is pointless designing a system that is best in scenarios which account for 1% of the time.

Paul, A good choice would be to ski @ Borovets but stay in Samokov. 5-10 Mins away by bus/car. Plus Borovets is far closer to you in VT than Bansko. Many good cheap hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops, ice rink etc in Samokov. If you are used to real BG prices you will be shocked in any of the resorts...

If you take your money out of the euro zone, you will have to play roulette with the exchange rate. Plus incur transfer/exchange fees and the same when the money comes back.

IMO better to have it handy, in the desired currency and that way your exposure is some what reduced to fluctuations.
