I found I could be understood in Bourgas for instance, but not in the village when I first learned. That's probably because they've got used to the idea that you can't speak the language. I've found that many Bulgarians when they see a foreigner automatically assume they can't speak the language. M...

I don't know if house/contents is the same but here in BG but car insurance allows 12 x monthly payments Yes, but that's simply paying in instalments. If you claim during the year you still have to pay the instalments, and if you stop paying the instalments I don't know if the same company will insu...

I think the 'novels' bit is a translation of 'romanlara', which would be Roma, i.e. Bulgarians are lynching Turks and Roma (or maybe Turkish Roma). At least in the riots in the UK it was (mainly) kids who wanted stuff going and taking it. The shop being smashed up in the video clip is being smashed ...

The original list seems to stop at the letter "m"

And it's strange that Chepelare is on the Bulgarian list...when I last looked, Chepelare was alive and kicking.

Perhaps the list should come with a warning "...populations may go up as well as down..."

You can use a VCR

Here (in the UK) we use a VCR with our Bulsatcom receiver. I'm sure you could pick one up in a second hand shop in BG. There are plenty knocking around on freecycle.

Beware if you are travelling through Stansted, they are charging £1 for the little plastic bags for liquids in hand luggage. Use your own bag from home... Actually, you put one pound in a bubble-gum type machine, you get 4 bags in one ball. So it's 25p each. I suppose we could have re-sold some of ...

I was at the airport last Tuesday and there were a number of taxis waiting at the airport for clients, who had probably taken people to the airport. Make sure you confirm the price before you go (although the meter should be on). Slightly off-topic, but if you have the time, do visit the aviation mu...

Be adventurous

How about just turning up and wandering through the old town looking for a "kvartira"? We have done that over the years (even with 4 adults and 4 children), and we've met lots of local families that way who remember us for years afterwards. You always find something in the end. A clue that a room is...
