This is the start of our 6th winter here, and the cold wind is blowing the snow horizontally as I write. We are in the Sliven area, and this is definitely the earliest snow that we've seen. Not settling at the moment, but cold, cold, cold!

Quite recently, a Bulgarian builder working on a house refurb in our village (for a local, not an incomer,) was paying 10 leva a day for labour. (The labourer is 53 years old, and was NOT a gypsy.) After a few weeks, he raised that to 15 leva a day.

Ripping-off Brits is, as I'm sure we're all aware, a National pastime, and buying wood seems to be looked upon as 'Harvest time', for the dealers. I had a very similar experience to yours last year. I tried to start a thread last year where people could write on here, a list of dealers to avoid, or,...

Now, how did this start? Ah yes: Bulgaria and Health and Safety; as perfect an example of an oxymoron as ever was. Read this a few days ago on Novonite. http://novinite.com/view_news.php?id=130475 I have to admit that the hospitals, and most of the medical staff in Sliven scare the hell out of me. D...

I know that this is an old thread, but couldn't find where else to post. I needed to go to the Irish Embassy in Sofia, so, against advice, decided on the train from Sliven. This is just a brief account of my experience. Had a great - if long - day out yesterday. The train journey was a delight! Clea...

After the best part of 5 years, I reckon there's ONE major question anyone SHOULD be asking when it comes to choosing a village: How reliable or otherwise is the water supply? It was sheer good fortune that we chose a village with NO problems, other than losing the supply for a short while, on the f...

Hello, Tiarnan. We have several fig 'bushes' which have grown from the bases of old trees, and they deliver huge crops of figs. As far as I can see, figs can be picked and eaten for quite a lengthy period, starting in a few weeks when they just start to show a little colour, until they are brown and...

Since coming to Bulgaria, I've been told, and have noted from personal experience that jackals come into the village during winter, when the weather is bad, and food may be easier to find than in the forests and mountains. What then, I wonder, does that say for our current weather when, just a few m...

Thankyou for those kind words, Cap'n, and on behalf of Mrs Beeches and myself, may I also say thanks for going to all the trouble of organising and posting the Easter puzzle. Most enjoyable, and good mental excercise for those of us trying our best to turn back the relentless onrush of the tide of s...
