Anni, I can sort of understand a Caribbean Island receiving EU funding if they are a protectorate of a member state, but several years ago we were in Fiji and the new Sigatoka bridge was being funded by the EU. I can see no logical connection at all to Fiji's right to funding. :smt102 Do the EU dis...

Think nothing of it, my dear fellow. I deserved to be pulled up. My remark was cheap and I regret it. I was just trying to heighten the metaphor of the "cold light of the morning after" but strayed beyond the bounds of good taste. The chap had a good war after all, against the Germans rather than th...

Seedy, can I just clarify with you: when you say about the "serious disturbance" to their internal labour market,, are you meaning BG to UK or UK to BG. I don't know what the Accession agreement was for UK to BG, but know that BG to UK has recently been extended from January 1, 2012 to January 1, 2...

And that's been answered, no right to, but possibly allowed to, depending on how the Bulgarians are feeling and how appealing a prospect you are :D

I think Gimlet might have been writing metaphorically about Ted (Heath, of course). He also had a quick waltz round with a bottle of ink around the same time, if I recall correctly... Indeed I was, mememe, and thank you for reminding me about the ink incident, which I had more or less forgott...

This thread reveals a widespread misconception that the UK has never been a full member of the EU. That is nonsense, both in terms of status and UK government commitment. The EU in its present form is largely a British construct. The single market was initially pushed through by Thatcher. Enlargemen...

1st January 1973, don't you remember the "bal de la joyeuse entree"?

I'm not sure who Ted danced with but he or she probably didn't look so good the morning after :D
