In the villages inland the going rate is 20 leva, but if there are a lot of Brits in the area, the workers may be used to a lot more !!, If you pay more, they should be working ALL day not sat on their bum for most of it.
We tend to pay workers on a price, not a day rate. so, 'how much will they charge for a particular piece of work' that way they can take as long or short as they like, price stays the same. Max 30 leva per man per day.
Hope this helps

big hike from 2004 when it was 5 lev a day so we paid 8 and then put it up to 10 in 2005 + lunch.
Seems the cost of living has risen faster so even 30 lev a day now buys less than 10 lev did 6/7 years ago.

Depends on the season. If you are compeating with the demands of the tobacco harvest in our area, you have to pay 30 leva a day for a young man just to barrow stuff or dig, and 40 for a builder, working a full day 8 to 5 pm with an hour off for lunch. They get tired towards the end of the day as they have already been up from 3 am picking leaves with a head torch and then they go back to stringing tobacco in the evening..... 8O But they did the job with good humour and dedication.

Well having recently arrived back from BG I had Yankol our regular good Gypsy up at my place in Balchik clearing our plot which was like the amazon rain forest complete with all those wild chestnuts or what ever they are seeded every where.
His rate is 30 Leva a day plus 5 Leva for lunch as I was not around to sort it, in addition a bottle of water, a bottle of Zargorka and 20 Victory blues so around 42 Leva a day or approx £18.46 all in.
We have used Yankol since 2004 and the bloke is a grafter and then some. He hardly stops and arrives at ours around 7.30 a.m and certainly no later than 8.00 a.m, and is like a robot, a quick stop for lunch and finishes around 6 p.m or sometimes later if the job is not finished.
The odd cigar and an extra beer and Yankol thinks he is king, great bloke and what a worker.

and we have been paying 60 leva a day for the past 2 years, obviously ott -but at the time we first used these same lads, there was a bigger demand in the area ie Ibar Golf etc and once you set a precedent its a bit difficult to lower it! but they do a decent job and we dont need them often

Hi there...we pay 20 leva per day but the going rate in the village is 15 leva, this is a very agricultural area so the demand for workers is great....but our guys are well and truely chuffed with what they get...plus a beer or 3 when they have finished at the end of the day :D
