Selling Via Amazon in BG

Hi All!

We currently have a small on-line Book selling business in the UK (selling new and used Books/CD's/DVD's etc) that we would like to keep running from BG once we move permanently - as well as selling Bulgarian Books etc if possible.

We sell mainly through Amazon: and though we don't make a fortune the money really does make a difference to our overall income.

We would probably still have to sell via Amazon UK as BG doesn't have an Amazon online outlet as far as we are aware.

The main things that concerns us are:

*A good,reliable internet connection.

*The reliability of the postal system in BG and also the fact that UK buyers may be put off by the fact that the books are coming from BG rather than the UK - although we send books to many countries at present so hopefully this wouldn't be a problem.

*Would a village Post office be willing to handle quite a few parcels at a time (hopefully!) without us upsetting the local customers who might be kept waiting in line?

We already have a lot of stock which we would bring with us and would hopefully pick up stock as needed either in the UK or in BG.

Does anyone else in BG sell via Amazon and if so how is it working out?

Any advice would be gratefully received - even if you think the business doesn't stand a Cat in Hell's chance in BG we'd like your opinion!

Many thanks in advance,

Greg. :)

When we left the UK in 2007 Amazon uk required us to have our stock available and shipped only from the UK. That is unless you were an American big company who can do what they like there. Most of our sales were via amazon before we moved here but we now have to rely on our own websites and a few amazon like alternatives. They were quite clear that if we sold from abroad they would drop us as a retailer. We have been too busy since coming here to check if their terms and conditions have changed, but they still don't allow people in Bulgaria to order from sellers on Amazon UK, so I suspect not. However if you have found out that they do, please let us know!

You might want to pm us so we can tell you more about our experiences here. To be frank our sales here are a fraction of our old UK sales now we can't use Amazon. We have 9000 books cataloged online, you can see them at the website below. We intend one day to get a German speaker to check out the rules on the website as we were told it might be different there.

You can now buy on and have it delivered to Bulagria. We do this all the time for our school as many books we cant get here. It costs a little more for shipping but ive never had any problems.
Ive never looked into selling from Bulgaria so cant help there.

I wouldn’t want to disagree with you MarkMc as it appears you have more experience than us but our singular experience, just prior to Xmas was that, to have books delivered to Bulgaria..
a) they added VAT to the cost of the books
b) they charged a high price, per book, for shipping and
c) the books were to be shipped from mainland Europe, as opposed to the UK
so we had them sent to an address in the UK (from the UK, for free and no VAT) and forwarded on to us, which worked out a lot cheaper.

As far as trading is concerned, songmaster2003, I think that you would be better concentrating on mainland Europe, if shipping from BG, and leave the UK market to your UK interest. Our experience of BG Post is good and I don’t think that you would have a big problem at the post office. Certainly not at a village post office and, in town, you would possibly have your own assistant, as opposed to queuing at a window.

Books are VAT-able in BG but not in GB. Rules on what is VAT-able vary from country to country within the EU. Confusing, huh ?

New books have VAT in BG. Not sure about second-hand. And technically books are VAT-able in GB but are zero-rated. Doubly confusing.

When importing books here you need to know that Article 704 of the Bulgarian constitution sys there is NO import duty on books. That is because it signed up to the Florence agreement of 1997 which controls this.

Thanks Lee - I've emailed Amazon to clarify their present stance on selling from Bulgaria and will let you know the outcome.
