Many Bulgarians would say that if it is not in Cyrillic it is not Bulgarian. I tend to agree with that viewpoint.

I mean if you write English in another alphabet - Arabic, Cyrillic or Devanagari, is it still English ?

Yes I use that system too sometimes, ie Latin alphabet for Bulgarian. It feels like I am cheating ! It may be phonetic and it may be easy for you to read but whatever it is, it is not Bulgarian. I mean if you write an English word using a different alphabet, is it still English ?

Interesting but then it is only half the job. Having transliterated from Roman to Cyrillic, you then have to translate the Cyrillic. Interesting though.

Think that I can sympathise with James. I am making painfully slow progress with Bulgarian in Cyrillic, but when people try to transpose Bulgarian words into latin script (especially in text messages or on web pages) I find it harder than if they hadn't bothered. This whole process effectively satirised in your Slaka book Scot. We VT people can spend whole evenings on the Turnovo vs Tarnovo debate.

PS: thanks for the book recommendation - got it; read it; enjoyed it.

Sorry to harp on but people really have to learn how to read Cyrillic. Failure to do so condemns you to life as an illiterate.
