I have been using expatpass for over 3 years now and it costs 5 euros a month or 50 a year but I get the adverts on itv and channel 4 and 5 but of course not on the BBC so paying does not get rid of the adverts. Once I am on the proxxy I access channel 4 and 5 via seesaw.com and you can pay 1.99 pouns per month not to have the ads.

What is the difference between a Proxy server and VPN?

Does it matter?

Which do I want to carry on watching UK telly?

A proxy server is a server that is not location specific, a VPN is a encrypted connection (often used by businesses for home workers) to securely connect to a server. They are not really the same thing.

There are companies that use proxy servers world wide to form a network, they use them to file share and allow the viewing of TV that is region restricted. Never used them myself but others that have say they allow region restrictions (ie Youtube) to be circumnavigated.

Hope this helps.

No it is not the telly adverts (I quite like good telly adverts, they can be mini masterpieces!) with the free proxy server I get the top quarter of the screen filled with adverts for buxsom ladies, and it hijacks other pages when I open them so I am looking to move to a paid service. Thanks for all explanations, I can't say I understand it all but I am now more informed. I think we will start by trying out expatpass.

Wikipedia is a wonderful resource…

If you don’t necessarily need it in layman’s terms, Lee…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN

and

and for the difference, see here…

I called my provider and he explained that the free servers still have to pay for usage of the server so fund this by adverts. I agree with you on some of the adverts but the food ones get me slavering and especially the prices now Turkey got so expensive - last week petrol went to 4.07 lira/lev a litre so prices will have to go higher but at least I will be in in Bulgaria in the New Year.

Ok, i have found 2 free BBC streams for the people here in BG. (Don't know if they will be up all the time but at this moment it is working)

http://sports-livez.com/channel/ch-53.php
http://sports-livez.com/channel/ch-51.php

I think it is handy if visitors sometimes visit the ads so they make a bit of money to pay for bandwidth usage.
(I have nothing to do with this streams but thought they may be useful for the UK people in BG)

And an update for snooker and darts fanatics:

Another update:
4 BBC channels and 4 ITV channels + more :

Hello Glenn

Thank you for the link. It would be great with a high speed connection, but me at present, I wait until they bring electricity to my village. At the moment I use our bicycle to power my laptop and my 42" plasma.
Any batteries anyone???
