Does anyone know for sure if the existing system of car tax in BG will be the same next year? We heard a rumour in the summer that tolls were being introduced to replace the vignettes in 2009. Has anyone any information on this?

Thanks Mihangel, for those links. Is this going ahead? Are there any plans for toll booths etc being erected on the motorways in readiness for January 2009 or has the whole idea been put on the back burner? Does anyone know??

Relax. There is no news on the scrapping of the scheme but then again it was originally introduced at very short notice 4 years ago so the potential remains. My guess would be that they don't do anything but if they do, it will be a charge added to petrol prices which is much more equitable. They will have to find a way to charge the TIR truckers mind. No sign of toll booths going up on the motorways.

The lady in the post office said there will be road stickers next year, too. No idea of the prices yet.

There was an item on bulgarian television couple weeks back about the state of the roads throughout the country, . I think it was one of the BG ministers who was being interviewed at the time The discussion got heated and one of the panel asked him where does all the vinette money go to, he claimed all the money they get from the vinette is paying for the new speed cameras, so I cant see them scrapping the vinette.

(Bad news) The vinette is still required next year.

(Good news) it will not go up in price next year.

(More bad news) The cost of road traffic (3rd party) insurance is going up by 100% in 2009

Please dont get me wrong, but how do roads get repaired or new roads paid for if we dont pay in some way??? the money has to come from somewhere. Yes we can all moan when we are paying high road tax etc and nothing is being done, but at the moment and even with an increase its still not a lot.
