you can get cider in hotel pomorie in sunny beach but it is very expensive

cider apples
Hello Greenfingers, I hope you pick up this thread because I cannot pm you.
From your previous posts, and nickname I gather you're an avid gardener, and since you posted to the cider thread I'm hoping you might help me here. I noticed the lack of cider ten years ago, and brought it up with the (huge) family as something that would eventually become a profitable venture. (this was when the economy was MUCH worse than now) My husband and I had spent a depressing day driving through abandoned orchards and vinyards, feeling like we were watching the fall of civilization. It seemed like a perfect fit, since his uncle is the retired brewmaster for zagorka. The older folks in the family said they used to make cider, but it had fallen out of fashion years and years ago. My understanding tho' is that cider apples are much drier and more acidic than table or juice apples. It seems we would have an un-ending supply of table apples, but it would probably produce a horribly sweet cider. I'm in the states now, we spend summers there so the kids are integrated into the Bulgarian part of their family. Since we are there 3-4 months at a time I always start some project I never finish, and the cider thing of course went no-where. ( they didn't beleive me when I told them there would be a real estate boom either....)
So - Since you're a brit who likes to garden- what strain of apple would YOU suggest for a cider apple? I found one nursery here which has a specialized stock, but they are on the other side of the country. I am hoping if I can ID the strain I might be able to find one of the OLD orchards, that has appropriate fruit. (I'm a biologist, so if I SEE the right one I can probably recognize it)
If nothing else, it is an afternoon project to look up!

A very interesting question and even more so the the possible project.
I would think it's the sort of project that could attract EU funding in the future with possible export potential too.
I regret that I don't have that sort of depth of knowledge to answer your question but would suggest that you contact the Botanical Institute in Troyan who amongst other things specialise in apples and who I'm sure will identify the strain of apple you would need and also assist with availability.
A wonderful potential project particularly given your inbuilt family expertise.

Hi steve,
Thrilled and suprised that you spotted the post. Don't make it much to Troyan, but have friends who work at the Agricultural school in Plovdiv ( my husband is Chepalarski).
So I will spend a day or two traipsing the school trying to find someone who can help me. Life is further complicated by the fact that I will have a second son sometime this week, so when we are there May-Sept I will be schlepping two boys. (somehow your credibility as a scientist is always comprimised while you're breast feeding....)
Anyway it sounds like a fun hobby/ project while my husband is overseeing the renovation. If I ever get it off the ground I'll touch base.
