And after about 5to 10 more days you will receive your old ones back with the corners cut off, I did the same and was wondering why I had a 2nd delivery from DHL.

Things were better in the days when you could drop in at the BritEmb and get your passport renewed there. I still have my old passport which states "Place of Issue : Sofia".

It makes me feel like a character out of a Len Deighton novel.

You can't do anything in the Brit Embassy these days - I went to register a child and its all online and via the UK. No idea what the embassy does quite frankly.

The role of the Foreign Office, Diplomatic Corps and Embassies is to provide outdoor relief to members of the Upper Classes.

I was paraphrasing Oscar Wilde. He was trying to suggest that the principal purpose for these institutions was to provide sheltered employment for toffs.

"Outdoor Relief" is 19th-century speak for "Welfare benefits".

In 50 years of working and travelling in three continents I have never had any help from a British Embassy or Consulate. Well I got my passport renewed in Sofia - but that was a Bulgarian lady who expedited it.
