Yep Scot, even worse it was meant to be Shumen. I have no explanation as to why I got the location so wrong and then stuffed the spelling of the wrong location.

I was after what people would think a fair daily rate for unskilled labour.

This was discussed recently I think, but with this website having recently lost a lot of data and all posts between 2011 and a few weeks ago, the information has disappeared into the ether it seems.

If it's any help the going rate in my area, about 30 km south-west of Sofia, is about 20-25 leva for an 8-hour day. That's for agricultural work = scything/hauling hay bales etc etc.

I would guess that rates for unskilled construction labouring are broadly similar - but have no personal experience because I do all my building work myself.

Depends on the location. The closer you get to big centers the higher the wage.
Just reporting as it has been said to me by bulgarians: 10 for gypsy, 15/20 for others on rural/smaller centers.

I've given 30 to both of them for 8 hours...they actually worked for less than 5h. The attemp was to end the work asap and give them some extra to overcome their usual productivity.
They were happy. For sporadic work is okay. For more days I would give 20/max 25...for their "8h of work"

Better take more people than pay them more in my opinion.
More money won't make them more productive or at least nothing noticiable and also you will give more people chance to work.

Ever noticed how many people work in a supermarket? Some 2 to 3 time the number you would see in other EU countries.

This is good advice - I always price it by the job to motivate them to get it done and off my land faster. If you pay by the hour they spend the first hour scouting your property on stuff to return for after the working day finishes.

Mal,

My advice in any village would be to pay them as little as possible.

I had some workers.

First I paid them 20 levs a day - their work was ****
Then I paid them 50 levs - theri work was still ****

So if you are going to get **** results, may as well pay **** money

Good luck if you are new to the village and want to take workers on.

You will need all the luck in the world to not get ripped off and pull off
ANY good results.

No wonder Brit settlers in BG get a bad reputation if they all think and behave like "Flaghostel"
