Dobrich was a market in a thriving agricultural region. Amazing fields there which are worth a look at harvest time. Pazardjik near Plovdiv was also on the road from Istanbul to Serbia and Vienna and a crossroads for those coming down from the Rhodopes and heading up to the Danube.

The small towns to the South of Pazardjik are also interesting.

A bit late replying, I forgot my login, only recently found it. I have a house near Bratzigovo! I rarely come across any Brits at all.

I have a house at Tsigov Chark, near Batak (one of the interesting towns Scott mentioned earlier). Brits seldom seen in this neck of the woods.

Batak is a memory of the horrors of the past.

Love Batak lake , very suggestive light and weather. It must be very therapeutic see as the panorama change day by day...hour by hour.
On the road for Dospat there are also other stunning smaller mountain lakes, cold even in july.

About the cities...Dospat and Batak...they are not very appealing. In the long and cold winter months they must be a nightmare... Dospat has roads with 40% inclination. Waiting for the traffic lights to turn green while on that inclination is not what I would do in daily basi...leave alone in the winter with snow and ice.

The South-west is a great area in Bulgaria. Served by two main airports Sophia and Plovdiv. Velingrad is delightful. Lots of history and beauty.

Villages that are not dead, and full of outward looking Bulgarians.

Better to be vibrant than wondering where it all is. Certainly not cheap in this area.

Pazardjik is a lovely county Town.
