Our neighbours goat is in kid....she says it should be born around March and will be for sale...if I took it how soon could I kill and eat it....was thinking would like to have it around June/July...would that be too soon. ?

ours werre born in March and were slaughtered at the beginning of August by the chap who bought them. we normally do ours in November when they've got a bit of meat on them!

Now almost certain we will take the kid goat on offer. Will fence off a piece of garden for it...BUT in March/April there will not be a lot of growth in the garden so what is recommended to feed this animal for the few months we'll keep it..? do we buy in anything special or rely on any hay we can buy in the village. ?

Is there no shepherd in your village. They usually take them out daily. Ours takes our sheep in the morning and returns her at night, 5 lv a month per beast.

How soon after birth will you be taking it on? If it is newborn, it will need feeding with a milk concentrate until at least the first three months, at least twice a day, (three to start with). I have never managed to get one to feed from a bucket like a calf so that means bottles and they have to be kept absolutely clean or you will get major **** happening. It will also need hay at night, and something for bedding, straw or wood shavings. Goats are browsers, and eat grass, bushes, and also debark trees very quickly. They would be a lot happier kept in pairs rather than one goat, a single one may make a lot of noise at night crying for company. Billies can be castrated if you are going to keep them longer than six months, that way the meat doesn't get the strong 'billy' taste. I would give a goat kid that is in a small area something to jump on and off, as they enjoy playing king of the castle. I would also take it for 'walks' around the village lanes to give it a more varied diet. We used to keep ours for around 8 or 10 months, as young ones have hardly any meat on them at all.
