Be very, very careful. Many of us have lost everything we worked and saved for here in Bulgaria. You need to read some of the horror stories as well as those from people lucky enough to have had a good experience.
Don't trust the smiling faces; assume that most of them are out to rip you off. There are some Brits here doing that, too, so do not fall into the trap of trusting people just because you share the same language.
Don't believe them when they tell you all the robberies and bad things are done by gypsies. I have only been ripped off by Bulgarians who were not gypsies.
Beware of shoddy, dangerous and utterly incompetent workmanship even from expensive 'bona fide' companies.
Winters here can be exceptionally harsh: in 2007/8 we had temperatures of minus 26 in VT. Electricity is very expensive indeed and heating systems usually inadequate or don't work at all (like mine which cost thousands of leva). Old-fashioned Bulgarian style burners are best. You may pay for a modern system but many companies have no genuine idea how to install them, so you end up with an expensive heating system which does not heat even one room, much less your house.
Expect life here to cost a lot more than you budgeted for.
Very good luck to you. I do hope you have all good experiences.
