Hoping to Live in Bulgaria soon

If you are new to the My Bulgaria forums and want a softer introduction other than diving straight in, just say 'hi' here. Tell us a little about yourself or your interest in Bulgaria maybe? We were all 'new' once!

Hello and welcome, you will get some good advice on here. We are just
back from our village house. Had a few hours in SB, then glad to get back
to the peace and quiet and friendly locals in our village. Hope all goes well
with your move, take your time. :D

Cheers Dron

We have a English family just bought a new house round the corner from
us. They sold last year in Turkey and bought in our village.
Check www for more on Medovo.

Health warning

Postby heatseeker » Thu Jul 23, 2009 12:35 pm

Be very, very careful. Many of us have lost everything we worked and saved for here in Bulgaria. You need to read some of the horror stories as well as those from people lucky enough to have had a good experience.

Don't trust the smiling faces; assume that most of them are out to rip you off. There are some Brits here doing that, too, so do not fall into the trap of trusting people just because you share the same language.

Don't believe them when they tell you all the robberies and bad things are done by gypsies. I have only been ripped off by Bulgarians who were not gypsies.

Beware of shoddy, dangerous and utterly incompetent workmanship even from expensive 'bona fide' companies.

Winters here can be exceptionally harsh: in 2007/8 we had temperatures of minus 26 in VT. Electricity is very expensive indeed and heating systems usually inadequate or don't work at all (like mine which cost thousands of leva). Old-fashioned Bulgarian style burners are best. You may pay for a modern system but many companies have no genuine idea how to install them, so you end up with an expensive heating system which does not heat even one room, much less your house.

Expect life here to cost a lot more than you budgeted for.

Very good luck to you. I do hope you have all good experiences.
