Pigeon Racing

Postby Milka » Wed May 07, 2008 9:10 pm

Not sure if this is the right place for this as it's not necessarily a sport...

We arrived in BG last weekend to find there had been hurricane-force winds a day or two before our arrival and a lost, exhausted racing pigeon on the roof of our summer kitchen. In the few days we were there we fed it some seed and left fresh water available but it made no attempt to fly back to it's own home. It seemed to think that the shutters at the top of our house were it's loft.

We'd hoped that by the time we'd left it would have recovered enough to try and find it's way home.

Being concerned that our housekeeper (who sees it as a pest) might attempt to take a shovel to it as soon as we had left, I spent the first few minutes after getting back to the UK Googling Bulgarian racing pigeons and discovered the following site:

http://www.sportpigeons.net/index.php?lang=en

Pigeon racing seems to be a popular sport in Bulgaria and following ongoing e-mails between me and a contact on the above site, it looks hopeful that the bird will be retrived from our garden and repatriated it with it's owner.

Many birds were lost that weekend so if anyone here finds a lost pigeon, please report it via this site.

Anyone interested in racing pigeons, there are clubs all over Bulgaria and this sites' organsisers communicate in excellent English.

Of course some Bulgarians keep up the ancient art of rearing pigeons for the meat. In medieval times no castle or monastery was without a "Columbarium" !
