Today (08 March) is International Women's Day!

Without Googling it, as far as I am aware, this celebration day has communist party origins and was mainly to celebrate women's contribution to the communist cause, but I might well be wrong.

I do not know just how many countries around the world acknowledge or celebrate this particular day, but again, I am told that Italy is included in the list.

In Russia it is a very important day for women (and Men, especially if they forget it) and a National Holiday. The price of flowers mainly imported from Holland seem to double or triple in price and women everywhere can be seen holding huge bouquets of flowers on the evening of 7 March going home after work struggling to get on the Metro (Underground). I've seen the odd one or two staggering not only from the weight of flowers, but from the alcohol they have been plied with by their work colleagues.

I guess, due to my suspected origins of it being a communist instigated celebration that we in the West stick to Mother's Day instead.

However, I understand that although not a National Holiday that 08 March is celebrated in Bulgaria. So, to all you ladies out there, take a day off, put your feet up, get the 'old man' to serve you and enjoy it.

Congratulations. :D

Well, well, well, you learn something everyday, when you try to find out. Seems the origins are Socialist and not Communist, but interesting reading all the same. I was completely unaware that it became acknowledged by the UN.

MW, what did you think the second "S" in USSR (or the 3rd "C" in CCCP  ) stood for? Communism was kind of a dirty word even in the Communist World!

I do not think wikki is the most accurate source of information and I actually think "...... originally called International Working Women’s Day......" is an oxymoron
