I would go talk directly to your local forestry officer, the gorski. Our village would die if people couldn't go up into the forest!

That's not as daft as it seems. There are a lot of military research establishments and other government installations dotted around Bulgaria dating from the Cold War. These are now unused and slowly going derelict, but they still have their paid security guards. (This provides useful employment in some areas.) These places are quite often hidden in woods. It's possible that you wandered near to one of these and gave a bored guard something to do.

Fruit plantations, vinyards and the like also have their guards when the fruit is in season.

Sounds like there is more to this than meets the eye, military or illegal activities ?....As others have said, take away the right to roam in BG and it loses another one of what makes it a special place.

Hi Carl

You may well find that you got too close to some sort of illegal activity. The only time we have ever had a problem walking around our area is when we came across people fishing with nets at Durankulak. They did not approach us but I got the impression they would have if we had not left as soon as we saw what they were doing.

Cheers Fred.

This has happened more than once to me at this time of year whilst logging operations are going on.

If the forestry commission are working in your area you will not able to walk there, I would check with your mayor first to find out if they are in your area.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I'll see what the mayor says on Monday, but I'm drafting a letter to the Ministry of the Interior too. If I can't walk in the countryside, I might as well be back walking in the Pennines with all its walls and fences.

Cheers

BGCarl
