Only ever change tyres whenever I can see wire coming through all four.

Change your winter tyres when temperatures are permanently above 7 degrees Celsius.

As far as I know it's entirely up to you, not like having lights on during the day.

As of the 1st November we're back to driving with the car lights ON at all times.

However, just heard on BTV news that winter tyres must be fitted.

Has the law changed making it compulsory to fit winter tyres in Bulgaria OR is it BTV thinking we all live in Sofia?

I have just done a bit of an internet search for winter tyres in BG and the results are very confusing. Unfortunately most of the information is not dated so I have no idea how recent it is. It would appear that winter tyres are not mandatory, but in snow conditions you could be deemed to have an unroadworthy vehicle without them and in certain conditions they could become mandatory. All very unhelpful but I rely on the advice of the locals none of whom are given to spending money unnecessarily and I live the relatively safe area with regard to snow namely, near Burgas. The locals almost without exception put on winter tyres, starting 1st Nov. I put winter tyres on my front (driven) wheels and a pair of very good condition summer tyres on the rear. So far without any problems in 3 winters.

As I understand it, provided that one has a set of snow-chains in the vehicle then that is enough to comply with the law. (Please correct me somebody if this is wrong.)

Never had to use chains even in 2 ft snow, but winter tyres are a neccessity in the South West from Mid Nov to End March. First year I thought I could get away without and spent a lot of the time driving like a hippo on an ice rink.

Ultimate tyre on my Jeep was a set of Firestone Destination All Weathers, used to drive from Bansko up the mountain to the top of the Gondola every day through the season. Going up the mountain was like a mountain goat, coming back down was like tip toeing on eggshells.

Winter Tyres

Postby Greenjacket » Sat Oct 30, 2010 8:40 am

Hello All,

My Bulgarian friend has just told me, that on the Bulgarian News last night, it stated, it was going to be a 20lv fine for any vehicles stopped by the Police that did not have winter tyres after the 1st November.
