Can it be done ? That is the salary for an experienced teacher in Bulgaria ? Could you do it ?

Of course some/most do do it, but first of all, lets look at the typical Bulgarian out-goings, i.e. mortgage or lack of one, rates, electricity etc. I am surprised that none of my Bulgarian workers look emancipated in anyway whatsoever, but I never see them with any food from a shop other than bread. Plus of course, you must have a mobile telephone with endless hours of free calls.

I'd find it difficult to feed the two of us, 3 dogs and a cat on that amount of money, but I am SURE that a lot can and do.

If I lived by myself in an paid up house in a town with a garden plot in walking / cycling distance, and didn't have any transport costs, it would be possible. Holidays would have to be to family in Bulgaria, and there would be few luxuries.

No.... exactly as MW quoted unless you live on bread and an odd yoghurt now and then? Maybe a few eggs and that hammy stuff from the local shop. Pay the electric and water? Bring up the kids? Put them through school? The rest doesn't bear thinking about

I have made the choice to do neither..

You forget to add in the extras for doing after hours teaching, annual presents from grateful parents and outright bribes for passing thick kids. Plus subsidised transport, holidays & food at work. Its not rolling in gravy, but it isn't 400 leva all in either....

Not by choice , or otherwise , I haven't spent much more than that over the last 8 months (if you don't count expenses like annual co. accounts and re-registration) . I don't scrimp on food (or anything else for that matter) , I drink and smoke (too much) , I have sattelite tv , internet , mobile phone and often leave lights on unneccessarily , and I go out or take holidays when I feel like it . On average I've been living on about 500lev a month , so if I wanted to it would be fairly easy to trim that down to 400lev ; bringing up a family on that income would be a whole different kettle of fish though .

Mat is playing his usual role as apologist for the Status Quo. I wonder what his monthly take home is !
