In all fairness Scott, I think that the 'harsh economic realities' have affected the whole world and certainly Western Europe. I assume this has a lot to do with the amount of Expats packing up and going home to seek work or get a better deal for their pensions. I still reckon that a fair days pay for a fair day's work is the best we can offer and should not subject us to rip-off merchants just because they are poor. Utopia, I know, but that is my take on things. There are certain elements of the Bulgarian population that have never done a days work other than thieving and even if you gave them 100 Lev per day to spend, it wouldn't change their attitude towards life for free.

I am surprised that none of my Bulgarian workers look emancipated in anyway whatsoever...

Well, it’s no wonder, if they are still hanging on to her skirt tail or (Freudian) slip…

Grandmother knows 2 and 200 is just away of showing that Grandmother knows best in such situations and is considered the WISER one of the Bulgarian group. I assume that in this context, Grandmother knows how to survive on 400 Lev per month, but I might well be WRONG.

Probably similar to

и Баба знае така

"everyone knows that, even grandma"

If you google.bg search for "Баба знае 2 и 200" (as opposed to google translate) you'll find lots of references.

It is interesting to note that none of the posters on this thread who have a declared occupation can live on 400 leva a month.

P.S Wikki, the source of all misinformation, fails to mention the vatican state in either list

You can buy 2 litres of kadarka for 2 lev 30, how much wine can you drink???

I am sat in the UK drinking my neighbours home-made Rakia, god bless his soul

If people can manage in the Uk on 400 lev (dole drawers and pensioners spring to mind) then surely they can in Bulgaria?

This topic is about whether one can live in Bulgaria on 400 leva a month. The off topic discussion regarding pensions has been moved to the Pensions topic here:

Because, I might suggest, we don't have too. If we did, we'd find away to manage like the locals, but it would be one big step for us 'foreigners'. How much money is that man living on or, more to the point trying to survive on? I read that he had stated that he had miscalculated somewhat and he is eating sawdust or similar.

Surely another factor to take into account is if anyone was living on such a small sum I hardly think internet would be a priority, even a small trip to town to use the internet cafe would be a drain on finances.
