The problem with a couple living on 400 is that one of them is usually a woman

In that case, the man will have to survive on 50 Lev per month.

living on 400 lev a month

Yes a single man should be able to do it. Im single.
Cost of elec, water, internet and cable TV 100 lev a month approx
I shop at Kaufland once a month for all my meat 80 lev a month approx
That would leave 320 for incidentals. Of course some of that you would have to put aside for winter fuel and car costs but all said it should leave 50 lev a month. However if your a smoker and like a drink then those figures are stuffed. But it can be done easily

I don't have a pool , any pets or drive a car ; but then the average Bulgarian teacher probably doesn't have a pool either , and if they have pets they're most likely fed on scraps and stale bread and their car probably runs on LPG . They quite likely do grow and rear some of their own food and make some of their own alcohol , spend long-weekends and holidays with relatives and go out to local bars and restaurants and to dinner at friends and relatives houses . This doesn't neccessarily translate as scrimping , it's an enjoyable way of life that people are used to , although that's not to say that teachers don't deserve much higher salaries ; they do . I wasn't trying to live economically , I just found that at the end of 8months I'd been spending about 500lev amonth on day-to-day living (not including annual expenses) . If I wanted to live on much less it wouldn't be that difficult , but it would certainly be less enjoyable . Tim .

Anyway, the next time you feel like cursing, "momey-grabbing Bulgarians", remember the harsh economic realities of life in the post-socialist Balkans !
