Postby Griswalds » Thu Feb 01, 2007 11:53 pm

 This is a silly question but when i'v been out for a meal i'v seen alot of bulgarians with a glass of drink which look's like milk, they seem to take a swig before they take a drink of rakia or another kind of spirit ,does anyone know why they do this. griswalds.

Hi Griswalds,

The milk alike white liquid is "айря̀н" (stirred joghurt with water) or buttermilk.
But, I think, they first take rakia, and then the buttermilk.
Mostly they us to drink it with the "мастика" or anisette, anise-flavoured brandy.

Hi griswalds,

it's mostly drunken on it's own and in the summer.
The reason they drink it after they have a sip of rakia - you've got it right! It's because of the heartburn!

Those who visit Indian restaurants may be familiar with 'Lassi'. This is the same drink that is known in Bulgaria and Turkey as 'Ayran'. Yoghurt diluted with water.
