Taxi cabs can be found at taxi ranks in towns and resorts, or can be ordered by phone. At Sofia airport and other places there are a number of ‘unofficial’ taxis in operation, normally using unmarked vehicles. You will know who they are as they are more proactive in approaching you just as you leave the terminal rather than you having to beckon them. They will also normally charge more! All official taxi cabs in Bulgaria are painted yellow with an official fare meter installed.
They operate at daytime and night time rates –from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. (daytime) and from 10.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. (night time). An additional fee is normally paid when ordering by phone.
The average rate is BGN 0.30 – BGN 0.45 per kilometre. Always check the table of fares before you alight.
Laws concerning taxi drivers are still unclear, so anyone can put a taxi sign on their car roof and charge whatever they want, or change their meter.
Beware the traffic in Sofia at certain times…if yours is a very short journey it may be quicker to walk!
