100% right - our (rented) house is of exactly this design. Though it has a full 100mm of dense insulation on the walls the open plan design it is terrible for wasting heat. Last year we had curtains up to divide it up into living areas and "other", this year we have a puppy so the curtains hide evil activity - difference. Last year 3 m3 of wood all winter, this year about 10 m3 (ok colder but still not the full story).
I have cut the cost of feeding my four dogs (and assorted strays) by boiling up a huge pot of water containing 1Kg of pet mince (at only 50 stotinki per kg). The resulting meaty gravy then liberally added to dried dog food from Penny - or stale bread, or rice for a change. The dogs love it and are looking great. I know there are arguments about dried dog food being rubbish and raw food diets etc but unless you are wealthy this is a great way to save the dogs from starving and help out the pension.
Pet mince? where is that from? Going to have to install two dogs around some property and must admit I'm not keen on the cost of feeding having seen canned pet food prices in Sofia.
Anyway to calculate costs from home made pet food would be great. Sredets area.
My BG mate always says to me
" Why do you try and heat the whole place when you can live in 1 room?" like they do, hence winter and summer area's in the houses.
"Wear another layer of clothes, why walk around the house in a t-shirt in the winter?" Of course he's right, but it just seems "alien" to wear big woolies and a hat indoors.
and rub your chest and back with goose fat when the clocks go back, stick news paper to this put a winter vest on top and dont take it off till Easter .....

Lol, 26 Canadian winters, most of them as bad or worse than anything here, in large open-plan homes, and I have never had a frozen pipe before.
The Canadians are a little bit better at building houses than the Bulgarians and oh..... Whats that in the basement, a 200,000 BTU boiler. How many 300m2 Bulgarian villas have under floor heating? in 1969 my parents house in Canada did! Heating and insulation appear to be very much secondary consideration here - despite the winters.

I feed my 2 on chicken carcasses (around 1.40lv/kg frozen from metro or kaufland), mixed with 1/2 loaf and one marg tub of dry biscuit.
As was said, boil chicken, use stock for juice in meal.
Total cost of food for my 2 mutleys for a week is roughly 12lv
