Great news for those of us in Bulgaria whose lives (literally) depend on not eating wheat, rye, barley or oats in any quantity and are sick of having to bring suitacases full of pasta and the like back with us from Blighty and other EU countries.............The Piccadilly stores stock GLUTEN FREE PASTA. This is a major breakthrough, all we need to do now is work on getting gluten and wheat free bread and flours here.
http://www.piccadilly.bg/index.php The English version is at the top right hand corner. There may be one near you. |

Just to update. (I know there are at least 4 other Coeliac board users). Piccadillys in Bourgas are now stocking Gluten Free /wheat free Schar 'B' Mix for bread 7.79 lv per kg. Each pack makes 2 loaves.. I've made some fantastic loaves this week with 'em. They are also stocking Schar Gluten free biscuits. 2 varieties (4.49lv a pack), one with chocolate chips (pepitas) and milk biscuits (frollini).
It's all in their 'free from' section, second aisle nearest the entrance. They're doing a lot of stuff for diabetics there too. WELL DONE PICCADILLYS.
Finally we can eat bread again. Thought i'd have to keep flying back to the UK for bread mixes.

HI, great to see there is some gluten free food available in Bulgaria. I was told that Metro also stock some gluten free foods - but haven't been able to verify this. I can tolorate a little wheat before becoming ill but two of my daughters are coeliacs and become VERY ill if they have any gluten.
As they are 2 and 6 years old, and will not be able to have the food we get on prescription in the UK, I am worried about reading food labels and finding alternatives for them to eat. We are arriving at the end of April and I have arranged language lessons - but I am worried that I will accidentally make the children ill before I work it out!
Any advice on food brands or shops would be great. We will be just south of VT. |

I know Metro has a good range for diabetics, not sure about Gluten free, but next time I am there will check, and take photos if necessary so you will know what to look for,

Thank you for your kind offer. I'm sure I would muddle through, but it is so much easier, and nicer, to have some help and advice Shopping with 6 children in tow is never easy, and I was worried about trying to read the labels on every item of packaged food! If I have an idea where to start it will make our arrival much less stressful |

There is an abominable lack of gluten free food in Metro and Piccadillys is still the best option. Fortunately there is a Carrefours opening soon in Bourgas, if it's like the one i go to in Turkey there will be an abundant choice of gluten free flours and also a good choice of herbs and spices.
BG diet do an array of GF food in Bulgaria, here's a link.http://www.dietbg.com/Kalin speaks English and will email you back if you click on the 'kontakt' link on the top right corner. |
