A reminder that BG is very rich in History and Archaeology :-

Unique Ancient Thracian Chariot Unearthed in Bulgaria

21 April 2007, Saturday

A completely intact Thracian chariot was unearthed by the Bulgarian archaeologist Vesselin Ignatov on Friday, Darik News reported.

The chariot was found near a burial barrow close to the central Bulgarian town of Nova Zagora. Ignatov and his team have already dated the finding to 2 century BC. The chariot has two wheels with its roof made of heavy bronze in the form of eagle heads and a folding iron chair, where the driver sat. The chariot was aimed to be pulled by three horses.

The uniqueness of the finding is that it is completely intact, with all its parts on place except the wooden ones, and now we can calculate its precise size and how exactly it was placed in the tomb, Ignatov said. He believes a second chariot will be found as the excavations continue.

Luckily this time the archaeologists reached the incredible finding before the treasure hunters, because they usually look only for gold and coins and destroy all other valuable objects.

Another Thracian chariot was found near the Sadievo village and another one was found near Korten, so now that there is a third one the regional historical museum in Nova Zagora town plans to open a museum of the Thracian chariots.

I think there should be an area on here to help educate us in the richness of Bulgarian history, and to show there is more to this country than property hunting. Thanks for the reminder.

I totally agree Varnaman.

I for one love to hear about the history and richness of Bulgaria. I had a few friends around for dinner on Friday and Mira, my Bulgarian teacher, and her husband Vinnelin were there. Vinnelin was telling me about the history of Bulgaria, the 5 brothers and that there used to be 3 Bulgaria's and something about the original Bulgaria being in Afghanistan. Now I most probably have got some of that wrong as I had had a bottle of wine by the time he had started telling me this!! Shocked Shocked

I am sure if I did a search on the Internet I could find out all about it but the point is I wasn't aware of it in the first place so wouldn't have known what to look for.

I am sure there are many memebers on here who have plenty of information on Bulgarian history that they would love to share with us and it would be great to have a separate section of thread for it.

Well done Scot a great post and very interesting.

When we visited Bulgaria (my first visit) the son in law of the hotel owners was talking about how proud they were of their history. He jokingly siggested that we should get a History of Bulgaria in English. He obviously didn't think such a thing existed.

However at the airport at Sofia we found on and I am enjoying dipping into it and finding out a little more. I will post title and ISBN number later.

I am really looking forward to visiting museums and art galleries on my next visit, to understand more about the country.

There is a lot of material. One good contemporary writer is Bozhidar Dimitrov. Look also for Mercia MacDermott, although most of hers are out of print. 'KIBEA' pubvlsihers in BG produce some nice glossy books on Bulgarian and Balkan History - in Bulgarian and English. There is a nice one entitled 'Rulers of Bulgaria'

Check out Helikon Bookstores if there is one near you in Bulgaria. If in Sofia go to Slaveikov Square and see the wonderful selection available there.

Not everyone shares my addiction to books - I know some people never look at a book from one year to the next. You really should try them !

I invite you all to come and see the town of Provadiya it's museum and the ruins of an ancien fortress. The most amazing thing is that there is a well which is deep 80m. Can you imagine how one can dig 80m though a rock to find water? It seems that Thracians have had knowledge well beyond our expectations. Wink
